Old Coyote the Dubious
Old Coyote is certainly one of the most enigmatic of Lithnagantas’s animal gods. Unlike Lixus or Nyamne, Old Coyote is a malicious god. While not encompassing the pure malicious nature of the Oinodaemon or committing the untold atrocities of Baal, Old Coyote is no god to be trifled with. While entirely selfish and unconcerned with the plights of mortals or even other gods, he delights in playing games with them. Sometimes he’ll offer a desperate mortal traveler a chance at life and will guide them through the wandering peaks of Skothar, leading the traveler to the charred remains of his village. Other times he’ll infiltrate Iouda’s final judgment ceremony and covertly tip the scales, thousands of unfortunate virtuous souls have been condemned to Tartarus thanks to Old Coyote’s cruel tricks. Nobody besides Lixus and perhaps Iocles knows Old Coyote’s true name and Lixus has been known to deny any disciple who wishes to know this secret. Many whisper in hushed tones that Old Coyote has a similarly powerful secret over Lixus and this keeps the usually rather talkative god ghostly quiet. Old Coyote is also known to torment the frantic and fearful Nyamne. It is rumored that Nyamne’s first mortal friend Isthese, was slain by Old Coyote before for it was his time. His cackling laugh was so thunderous that villagers claim to have heard it over the razing of the Great Forest of Traedorn as Nyamne grieved.
Despite his cruelty, Old Coyote has been known to take followers in the past. He often grants extraordinary powers to the eccentric killers and deranged tricksters of the world. Churches and ritual are far beyond the scope of Old Coyote, he lives for the simple pleasures derived from abject cruelty. A proper church to him was built many centuries ago far off in Skothar as a mean of appeasement, they were found by wandering orc clans being ripped to shreds by Coyote’s feral kin and left to rot in the baking sun. Appeasing him is impossible, he has made men dance nude into the home of their lord accompanying the promise that he won’t reveal a even more scandalous secret. These promises are never kept and children are always warned by superstitious grandmothers to never lend an ear to the Old Coyote.
