Dimos, the Old Kingdom
Dimos rests as one of the oldest and most well documented civilizations in the known world and has gone through many transformations and leadership changes throughout its over 4000 year lifespan. Dimean history is broken into 7 distinct periods(often simply referred to by their number): The Age of Silence, The Era of the First Word, The Old Kingdom, The Age of Barbarism, The Broken Kingdom Era, The New Kingdom, and The Age of Obligation. The Age of Silence represents the time before writing when Dimos was primarily inhabited by nomadic hunter-gatherer civilizations. It’s speculated that the first small towns and farming were developed in this era. Following that is the Era of the First Word, the time in which written language first appeared in Dimos(and possibly the world). Legend says that a nameless farmer wandered off into the hills following his wayward dog, at an unknown location he met the King of Limbs. He abandoned his farm to learn under this mysterious being(who’s form is never described) and returned with The First Word, a stone tablet that simply read “I am the King of Limbs.” This tablet was the first thing written and Dimean and currently sits in the Corvosian Library, within the city of Cyridian(current capital of Dimos.) The Old Kingdom is the era where Dimos originally rose to prominence, the many ancient keeps that dot the landscape were built during this period. It was here that the nature cults and various agrarian focused communities were stamped out and the worshipers of Falstrod asserted their dominance over the land.
The Age of Barbarism marks the beginning of a dark period in Dimean history. Invaders and corruption slowly shattered the Old Kingdom, turning it into a husk of its former glory. Feraxian barbarians marauded through the south, eventually reaching the gates of Cyridian herself. While the city itself never fell the damage was done, Dimos had officially been fractured and many though that this was the end of their old way of life. Many orders of knights rose to the occasion and drove the barbarians out of Dimos, but they took the fractured kingdom as a means of gaining more power for themselves, ending the centralized power in Dimos for hundreds of years. Following the last Feraxians being driven out of Dimos 200 years after their invasion, the Broken Kingdom Era began. During this time the knight orders that had been the saviors of Dimos in previous generations now turned against their people and broke away from the king(though not officially) and created their own “duchies” that essentially served as independant kingdoms that only respected the king honorarily. This decentralized limbo lasted for 1000 years and is generally regarded by historians as an era of “unprecedented stagnation”
