Daemons and The Oinodaemon
Between the visionary and organized devils and the marauding and dauntless demons lies the enigmatic daemons. Daemons are the least understood of what planar scholars call “The Three Fundamental Evils” in order to understand them and their inscrutable leader, the Oinodaemon it’s key to understand the origins of evil and Tartarus. Tartarus’s founding is only documented in the Infinite Library of Ioano within the meditation realm. No knowledge has escaped the watchful eye of the Chroniclers. Tartarus is thought to have been formed as a geographical region of the original plane of existence created by Io at the beginning of creation. Primordials, the progenitor to humans and all the beings seen throughout the multiverse had a natural curiosity bestowed to them by Iocles and they would often explore the outer bounds to learn more about this wonderful world they had been gifted by their divine mother.
Unfortunately even in this time, tears to planes beyond understanding began to form. Voices of unfathomable beings that exist beyond reality called to them. It is said that Baal committed the first sin and it is said that Asmodeus committed the first vengeance. Far beyond the watchful eyes of Io and her favored children, these two became the first demon and the first devil. The Oinodaemon’s name remains unknown but it is said that after Baal slew Etreides the Oinodaemon waited at the site of his death for one hundred days and one hundred nights for the first soul to be released. Rather than reverting to a lower form as intended by Iocles, Etreides’s essence was trapped in the Oinodaemon’s hands. Here lies the capture of the first soul and the birth of Daemons. While demons embody the hatred and destruction that destroy the body and release the soul, devils embody the vengeance and misguided justice over transgressions of the first law, the daemons embody the vanity to hold one’s self over others and to hold their very essence in a unending sorrow between death and rebirth in the lower state.
Not much has changed for Daemons in the uncounted eons since the first sins but they’re grown ever more clever. Once the Oinodaemon learned that souls could be used for practical purposes. Souls made him stronger and thus daemons learned of the value of collecting souls. Few truly understand the infinite resource of power that the Oinodaemon has access to with the unending collection of souls gathered within his hidden Vault of Souls. Scholars believe that the most inevitable apocalypse is that of the Oinodaemon becoming strong enough to gather the souls of Iocles and the Old Gods and fully extinguishing life from the multiverse. daemons rarely act toward goals beyond collecting and adding souls to the Vault of Souls, making many believe that daemons are gullible fools to be bartered with for power. Within Tartarus Daemons often appear to the lost and downtrodden souls using any means to escape the endless torment of demons with offers of reprise and safety. It’ll often be an exchange, gather the soul of another for exclusive access to one of the daemon “sanctuaries.” These more serve as factories of death where more and more unwitting souls collect within for a brief period of reprise only to be slaughtered like cattle until the next crop comes to this false refuge.
